What is Multi-Platform Restreaming?

YouTube uses RTMP for stream ingestion. Navigate to YouTube Studio, select "Go Live," and copy your stream key from the Stream Settings panel. The default ingest URL is rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2. YouTube supports up to 4K resolution at 60fps and offers ultra-low latency mode. For restreaming, ensure your bitrate stays within YouTube's recommended range of 4,500-9,000 Kbps for 1080p60.

Twitch

Twitch provides region-specific ingest servers for optimal performance. Your stream key is available in the Twitch Dashboard under Settings > Stream. The nearest ingest endpoint can be found using Twitch's ingests API. Twitch recommends 6,000 Kbps for 1080p60 content. Note that Twitch's simulcast policy now permits restreaming for all partners and affiliates.

Facebook Live

Facebook Live accepts RTMP streams through its Live Producer tool. The ingest URL is rtmps://live-api-s.facebook.com:443/rtmp/ — note the RTMPS (secure) protocol. Facebook supports up to 1080p at 30fps for most pages and profiles. Stream keys are generated per session in Live Producer.

Instagram Live

Instagram now supports RTMP streaming for professional accounts, enabling restreaming from external tools. Access the stream URL and key through Instagram's Professional Dashboard or the Meta Business Suite. Instagram Live is limited to 1080p vertical (9:16) or landscape (16:9) formats.

TikTok Live

TikTok LIVE Studio provides RTMP credentials for accounts with 1,000+ followers. The platform supports up to 1080p and provides its own ingest URL and stream key through the LIVE Center. TikTok audiences expect vertical content, so consider your framing if restreaming from a horizontal source.

Bandwidth Requirements and Calculations

Bandwidth is the most critical consideration for restreaming. Unlike a single-destination stream, restreaming multiplies your upload bandwidth requirement by the number of destinations.

Here is a practical calculation:

  • Single 1080p stream at 6 Mbps: Requires approximately 6-7 Mbps upload
  • Restreaming to 3 platforms: Requires approximately 18-21 Mbps upload
  • Restreaming to 5 platforms: Requires approximately 30-35 Mbps upload

  • Higher reliability: Data center connections are more stable than residential internet
  • Transcoding options: The server can adjust resolution, bitrate, or codec per destination
  • No local CPU overhead: Your streaming machine stays responsive

Optimizing Your Restream Quality

To get the best results across all platforms, follow these best practices:

  • Use a consistent bitrate: Set your bitrate to the lowest common denominator among your target platforms. For most platforms, 4,500-6,000 Kbps for 1080p30 works universally.
  • Choose the right codec: H.264 with the Main or High profile is universally supported. Avoid H.265 or AV1 for restreaming inputs as not all platforms accept them.
  • Set keyframe interval to 2 seconds: All major platforms require or recommend a 2-second keyframe interval for proper segmentation.
  • Use CBR (Constant Bitrate): CBR encoding provides the most predictable streaming performance across multiple destinations.
  • Audio at 128-320 Kbps AAC: Stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps is sufficient for most content; music-focused streams should use 256-320 Kbps.
